Community Leaders Meet with Congressional Office to Discuss Nigeria’s CPC Status

House hearing on Conflict and Persecution in Nigeria: The Case for a CPC Designation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. — On April 2, 2025, the Nigerian Center led a coalition of Nigerian American community organizations to meet with the office of Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-04) to discuss House Resolution 220, which calls for the re-designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) by the United States.

The coalition, which includes the Nigerian Center, Nigerian American Lawyers Association, Governance Advancement Initiative for Nigeria, and Nigerian American Public Affairs Committee, convened the meeting in response to the recent Congressional hearing on the proposed resolution. The coalition believes it is critical for U.S. lawmakers to hear directly from Nigerian American community members and consider perspectives that were not fully addressed during the House hearing.

To further discuss the implications of this resolution, the Nigerian Center will host a community forum on April 11, 2025. The event will feature organizations and leaders involved in this campaign, providing an opportunity to explore both supporting and opposing arguments. Advocacy representatives will be present to offer insights and answer community questions.
